Red-Light Routine at Home: Why Your Plan Should Change

Red-Light Routine at Home:
Why Your Plan Should Change

A red-light routine works best when it fits you and your device. Why borrowed routines fall short, and how the Luminous Protocol changes as you do.

Your body isn't the same in November as in June. Your light plan shouldn't be either.

‍

The short answer: a red-light routine works best when it fits the person using it and the device they use. Most home routines are borrowed: one session length, one schedule, the same all year. The Luminous Protocol starts from your goals, your day and your device, and from this month it is being rebuilt to change with you over time.

‍

Why most red-light routines are borrowed

If you have searched for how to use red light at home, you have probably met the same advice everywhere: ten to twenty minutes a day, most days of the week. It is a reasonable place to start. It is also the same answer for a small handheld panel and a full-body panel, for someone winding down in the evening and someone recovering from a morning run, for July and for December.

A borrowed routine isn't wrong. It just wasn't made for anyone in particular. It doesn't know how much light your device puts out, what you're using it for, or when you realistically have ten quiet minutes. So most people end up guessing, and guessing is where consistency fades.

We built the Luminous Protocol to replace the guess with a plan. If you want the full walkthrough of how a plan is built, from tier to intake to device calibration, read The Luminous Protocol: how we build a plan that's actually yours. This post is about what comes next: why a plan has to keep up with you.

‍

What a generic routine leaves out

‍

Your device

Devices differ in the wavelengths they emit, how much light reaches you and how much of you they cover. The Luminous Essential uses two wavelengths, 660 and 850 nm. The Pro Series uses CellLight™, eight wavelengths across red and near-infrared: 630, 650, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm. A session length that suits one device doesn't simply carry over to another.

Your goals

People come to us with different reasons: an evening wind-down, a steadier morning routine, recovery after training. Each asks for a different combination of wavelengths, timing and frequency. One routine for every goal means none of them is planned for.

Your day

The best plan is the one you will actually follow. A session that clashes with your commute, your training or your evening gets skipped. A plan should fit into the day you have, not the day an instruction leaflet imagines.

Your season

Your days in November aren't your days in June. There is less daylight, more time indoors, often a different training rhythm and different priorities. A plan written once, in summer, is a snapshot. By winter it may describe someone you no longer are.

The Essential

How the Luminous Protocol builds your plan

Here is the short version:

  1. Intake. You complete the Theme Check, a structured questionnaire of about 5–10 minutes about your background, your goals and your routine.
  2. Evidence. Our OptimalDose™ engine cross-references your intake against 9,500+ indexed studies in our research database, which Sarah and the research team keep up to date.
  3. Device. Your plan is calibrated to the output of the device you use.
  4. Your plan. You receive your personalised recommendation on a personal web page: which wavelengths to use for each goal, for how long, how often and when.

Until now, the depth of a Protocol was set by how many topics it covered. That is what's changing.

‍

What's changing: a plan that keeps up with you

This month we begin rolling out the next version of the Luminous Protocol. It is built around one idea: a plan should move when you do.

  • Two Protocols instead of a ladder of tiers. From 20 November, the Luminous Protocol (€99) gives you a personalised recommendation for every topic you choose, plus supplement and lifestyle recommendations. Luminous Protocol Guided (€199) adds 12 months of guidance. You are no longer limited by the number of topics; what differs is how closely we accompany you.
  • Re-checks. With Guided, your plan is revisited up to four times in 12 months, at months 3, 6 and 9, and again at 12, rather than left as it was on day one.
  • Seasonal adjustment. Your plan is adapted as the year turns, so your winter routine is built for winter.
  • AI support. Questions between re-checks are answered in the context of your own plan. Included with Guided.

The principle stays the same as before: the Theme Check is the input, the Protocol is the output. What changes is that the output is no longer fixed.

Already have a Protocol? Your plan stays valid. From 20 November you can upgrade to Guided for €99 instead of €199.

What the Protocol is, and what it isn't

The Luminous Protocol is a wellness routine for at-home red-light use. It is not a medical treatment, and it doesn't replace advice from your doctor. If you have a health condition, are pregnant or take medication that affects light sensitivity, talk to a medical professional before starting any light routine.

Light research is an active field. We follow it closely, and we are open about which questions are still open. That is why the plan is built to be revisited.

Start here

If your routine is borrowed, start here. It takes about ten minutes, and it is the difference between a routine and a plan.

‍

FAQ

How long should a red light therapy session be at home? It depends on your device, your goal and your routine. The common advice of 10–20 minutes is a starting point, not a plan. The Luminous Protocol sets the duration for your specific device and goal.

How often should I use red light? Consistency matters more than intensity. How often depends on what you're using it for. Your Protocol sets a frequency for each goal so it fits into a normal week.

Should my red-light routine change with the seasons? Your daylight, routine and priorities shift through the year, so a plan written in summer can be out of date by winter. Re-checks and seasonal adjustment let your plan follow those changes.

Is the Luminous Protocol a medical treatment? No. It is a personalised wellness routine for at-home red-light use. If you have a health condition, speak to a medical professional first.
